Pandemics and infectious diseases pose a serious threat because they spread at a rapid pace and affect many people. Governments and major non-for-profit organizations make serious efforts to control infectious and contagious diseases such as smallpox, hemorrhagic fever, rodent-borne diseases, meningitis, cholera, and yellow fever. Airborne diseases such as MERS, severe acute respiratory syndrome, and influenza also pose a threat because they usually occur in great numbers. Vulnerable populations such as the elderly, children, and persons with a compromised immune system are at risk. Governments around the world implement strategies, programs, and initiatives to fight reemerging and emerging pandemics in an effort to contain them. Timely response and prevention are the key to limiting the impact of outbreaks and infectious diseases. Special efforts are made to reduce the risk of international spread. Outbreaks can last for years, and it is important to raise awareness and educate communities at risk.

Funding Eligibility

Major organizations and institutes are involved in health research to develop new medications and prevent outbreaks and deadly diseases.

The Application Process

Applicants register, complete an application, and submit a letter of intent describing their proposed area of research. The type of information to include depends on the funding opportunity, i.e. whether applying for an operating grant, salary award, foundation scheme, fellowship, training grant, or project scheme. Funding Decisions

Different factors are taken into account to make funding decisions, including notes, reviews, and scores. Committees and staff review ratings to create ranking lists and allocate funding to approved applications. Applicants are informed about funding decisions by mail or online. Awards and grants committees are tasked with evaluations, funding decisions, and rating and ranking. Committees are tasked with evaluating funding proposals for business awards, fellowship and doctoral research awards, and clinician scientist, training, and salary awards. They are also tasked with assessments for randomized control trials awards.

Reporting Requirements

Reporting requirements are established to help prevent omissions and errors. Checklists are compiled to ensure successful implementation and adherence to requirements and guidance. Reporting criteria normally outline the type of information to include, i.e. empirical evidence, results, methodology, and so on. The goal is to address the issue of poor research reporting. Reporting requirements also help monitor the impact of research and individual grants in time. They also help assess the impact of different funding strategies, programs, and opportunities. Nominated applicants are usually required to compile and submit a final report online. Grant and award recipients are asked to disseminate and communicate research findings and use the most appropriate channels to this end. Funding reference numbers should be cited as to acknowledge contribution and funding support. All sources of financial support must be listed in case that two or more funding bodies support the fellowship or award. The ultimate goal is to maximize the impact of research, contribute to health research efforts, and increase visibility so that findings reach a broader audience.
